Spreading Love and Hope For Valentine’s Day
By Linda Gillick

Carlette graciously brought sweet treats, while I brought Valentine’s cards from Little Trees Project, along with extras for the residents to share with their favorite people. The joy on their faces was unmistakable as they received their treats, many enjoying their cookies right away.
As we visited, we saw familiar faces and met new ones, each interaction reminding us why these visits matter.
Our first stop was with Mac. The moment we saw his eyes light up, we knew he was glad to see us. Carlette engaged him in conversation, then took time to chat with his roommate, George. Before leaving, I asked Mac if he wanted a hug. His answer was an enthusiastic yes. As I leaned down, his arm suddenly emerged from under the covers and wrapped tightly around my neck. It took me by surprise—I had never seen him move anything besides his head. I hugged him back, telling him I loved him, and he responded in kind.
In the dining room, Edna greeted us with a smile. We gave her cookies and a card. She proudly showed me a picture I had given her of the two of us, thrilled that I remembered. She loved her Valentine’s card and gave hers to Carlette and me so she would have our names. I had brought a couple of small toiletries for her, and she asked us to leave them in her room.
Eugene had just finished his shower and, though dressed in a coat, was still cold. He mentioned he could use a sock cap, gloves, and a heavy blanket. He and Carlette had a great conversation—she has a way of lifting people’s spirits just by being near them.
Nick and Christina returned with a wonderful update on Dwain. He had been studying his Bible and giving all the glory to God for his recovery. So Carlette and I went to see him. He was on his way to the gym, full of energy and in great spirits, joyfully saying, “I love, love, love the Word of the Lord!”
Back in the dining room, Yvonne welcomed us with her signature hug, and Carlette passed out the last of the cookies and cupcakes. Daniel, in his excitement, ate his cupcake—paper and all! Thankfully, he spit out the paper, and we all laughed with him.
The staff was incredible, warmly welcoming us and even sharing their office so we could prepare for our visits. Their kindness and dedication are truly inspiring.
Moments like these remind me that, even in uncertainty, God is at work, bringing healing, redemption, and greater outcomes than we could imagine.
“We love because He first loved us.” – 1 John 4:19
