A New Mission at 86: Sue’s Story

By Linda Gillick

When I first met Sue on May 10th, I could tell right away she was someone special. As a younger woman, she had been the head manager over five stores—a clear sign she was someone who knew how to take charge. But now, at age 86, Sue was wrestling with a question many of us face at some point in life: “Why am I still here?”

She shared that she believed God must still have a purpose for her. As soon as she said those words, I knew in my heart what that purpose could be. I had brought a small stack of blank cards with me—just in case I felt led to write someone a note—and I knew they were meant for Sue.

I gently asked if she would consider writing encouragement cards to other residents, nurses, or even family and friends. She was hesitant at first, unsure about her handwriting and whether it would matter. But together, we wrote the first card. I wrote a sentence, then she added her own and signed it. She said she’d try—and that was enough.

When I returned a few days later, Sue was beaming. The people she had given cards to were so grateful, she said, and she was excited to keep going. The only cards I had left at home were Thank You cards—and wouldn’t you know, that’s exactly what she asked for.

It’s amazing how something as simple as a handwritten note can bring purpose to one person and encouragement to another. And it’s a beautiful reminder that no matter our age, God isn’t finished with us yet.
